전남도, 여수공항 활주로 연장·안전시설 강화…

전남도는 2026 여수세계섬박람회 성공 개최와 남해안 관광·산업 활성화를 위해 여수공항 활주로 연장과 항행안전시설 개선에 속도를 내고 있다.

전남도는 현재 2,100m인 여수공항 활주로를 2,800m로 연장하고, 2026 여수세계섬박람회 기간 중 부정기 국제선 운항 허가를 지원할 것을 국토교통부에 건의했다고 밝혔다.

여수공항은 전남 동부권과 남해안남중권의 관광·산업 핵심 기반시설임에도 불구하고, 전국 공항 중 두 번째로 짧은 활주로와 방위각시설(둔덕) 높이 4.0m로 인해 안전성 문제가 꾸준히 제기되어 왔다.

이에 따라 항공기 운항 기종이 제한되고, 기상 악화 시 결항이 잦은 등 공항 운영상 한계가 나타나고 있다.

전남도는 이용객의 불안을 해소하고 안전한 운항환경을 조성하기 위해 제7차 공항개발 종합계획(2026~2030년)에 활주로 연장을 반영해 줄 것을 요청했다.

또한, 방위각시설 개선, 종단안전구역 확보, 조류탐지레이더 설치 등 항행안전시설 개선도 함께 건의했다.

세부 계획에 따르면, 2025년 말까지 방위각시설을 개선하고, 활주로 종단안전구역은 208m에서 240m로 확대한다. 2026년까지 조류탐지레이더를 설치해 조류충돌 위험을 예방하는 등 안전성을 한층 강화할 예정이다.

특히 30개국, 300만 명 참여를 목표로 하는 2026 여수세계섬박람회에 맞춰, 일본·중국 등 주요 도시를 연결하는 한시적 국제선 노선도 개설해 외국인 방문객의 편의를 제공하고 국제행사 위상을 높인다는 방침이다.

김영록 전남도지사는 “여수공항을 남해안남중권 관광과 산업을 아우르는 대표 공항으로 육성하기 위해서는 활주로 연장과 안전성 강화가 필요하다”며, “정부의 적극적인 지원을 통해 여수공항을 안전하고 신뢰받는 공항으로 만들어 2026 여수세계섬박람회의 성공 개최와 지역 발전을 견인하겠다.”고 강조했다.

Driving the Success of the 2026 Yeosu World Islands Expo
[Yeosu, Jeonnam – News Channel] Jeonnam Province is accelerating efforts to extend the runway and improve navigational safety facilities at Yeosu Airport in preparation for the successful hosting of the 2026 Yeosu World Islands Expo and to promote tourism and industry in the southern coastal region.
Currently, the runway at Yeosu Airport measures 2,100 meters. Jeonnam Province has proposed to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport to extend it to 2,800 meters and to permit temporary international flights during the Expo period in 2026.
Despite being a key infrastructure hub for tourism and industry in the eastern part of Jeonnam and the southern coastal region, Yeosu Airport faces safety concerns due to its second-shortest runway among national airports and the 4.0-meter-high obstacle (Dundeok) in the runway approach area. Consequently, the types of aircraft that can operate are limited, and flight cancellations are frequent during adverse weather conditions, highlighting operational constraints.
To ensure a safe operating environment and alleviate passenger concerns, Jeonnam Province has requested that the runway extension be reflected in the 7th Comprehensive Airport Development Plan (2026–2030). In addition, improvements to navigational safety facilities—including obstacle removal, expansion of the runway end safety area, and installation of bird detection radar—have also been proposed.
According to the detailed plan, the province will complete obstacle removal by the end of 2025, expand the runway end safety area from 208 meters to 240 meters, and install bird detection radar by 2026 to prevent bird strikes and enhance operational safety.
In line with the Expo, which aims to attract 3 million visitors from 30 countries, temporary international flight routes connecting major cities in Japan and China will be established to facilitate the travel of foreign visitors and elevate the global status of the event.
Governor Kim Young-rok emphasized, “To develop Yeosu Airport as a representative airport of the southern coastal region, runway extension and safety enhancement are essential. With the active support of the government, we will make Yeosu Airport a safe and trusted airport, ensuring the successful hosting of the 2026 Yeosu World Islands Expo and driving regional development.”
