한국 차 문화의 전통과 역사를 한눈에 볼 수 있는 ‘제34회 초의문화제’가 오는 10월 18일부터 19일까지 해남 대흥사 일원과 호국대전 앞, 해남군민광장에서 열린다.
해남군이 주최하고, (사) 해남다인회가 주관하며, 해남군의회, 대흥사차인연합회, 다도대학, (재)해남문화관광 등이 후원하는 이번 행사는 대한민국 차의 역사와 전통을 이어가는 중요한 문화 축제로 평가받는다.
18일 전야제, 전통과 현대가 어우러진 찻자리
첫날인 18일에는 전야제 축하공연으로 막이 오른다.
풍물굿패 ‘해원’의 흥겨운 공연과 함께 관내 차 단체가 준비한 ‘별빛 들차회 찻자리’가 운영된다.
참석자들은 전통 다도 체험을 통해 차의 향과 맛, 그리고 다례의 예법을 직접 느낄 수 있으며, 행운권 추첨 이벤트도 진행되어 즐거움을 더한다.
행사 관계자는 “차의 정신과 전통을 경험하며, 모두가 함께 즐기는 축제의 장이 되길 바란다.”고 말했다.
19일, 본 행사와 다채로운 체험 프로그램
둘째 날인 19일에는 식전행사와 기념식으로 시작된다.
이어 들차회 길놀이굿, 아름다운 찻자리 시연, 개회선언 육법공양이 진행되며, 올해의 초의문화재 경과보고와 초의상 시상식이 열린다.
행사는 오후 3시 40분 폐회를 끝으로 마무리되며, 참가자들은 하루 종일 한국 전통 차 문화의 정수를 체험할 수 있다.

초의문화제는 단순한 지역 축제를 넘어 한국을 대표하는 차 문화 행사로 자리매김했다.
지난 수년간 언론 보도를 통해 대한민국 차의 역사와 해남 지역 차 문화의 가치를 널리 알린 바 있으며, 올해 역시 전국 차 애호가와 관광객이 참여할 것으로 기대된다.
해남군 관계자는 “초의문화제는 단순한 문화제가 아니라, 한국 차 문화의 전통과 정신을 계승하고 체험할 수 있는 중요한 축제”라며, “많은 분들이 참여해 초의선사의 다도 정신과 해남의 차 문화를 직접 느끼길 바란다.”고 말했다.

The 34th Choui Cultural Festival to be Held at Daheungsa Temple from October 18–19Experience the Pride of Korean Tea Culture in Haenam
The 34th Choui Cultural Festival, a celebration of the tradition and history of Korean tea culture, will take place from October 18 to 19 at Daheungsa Temple, in front of Hogukdaejeon, and Haenam Citizen Square.
The festival is hosted by Haenam County and organized by the Haenam Dain Association, with support from Haenam County Council, the Daheungsa Tea Association, the Tea University, and the Haenam Culture &Tourism Foundation. It is recognized as an important cultural event that continues the legacy of Korean tea history and tradition.
October 18: Opening Night – A Blend of Tradition and Modern Tea Culture
The festival kicks off on the 18th with an opening night celebration.
Visitors can enjoy an energetic performance by the traditional percussion troupe ‘Haewon’, alongside the ‘Starlight Outdoor Tea Ceremony’ hosted by local tea organizations. Attendees will have the opportunity to experience traditional tea rituals, savor the aroma and taste of tea, and learn the proper etiquette of tea ceremonies. A raffle event adds extra excitement for participants.
“We hope everyone can experience the spirit and tradition of tea and enjoy a festival that brings people together,” said a festival official.
October 19: Main Event and Diverse Cultural Experiences
The second day, October 19, begins with pre-ceremony activities and a commemorative ceremony.
The program continues with a tea procession, beautiful tea ceremony demonstrations, and the official opening with the Six-Offering Ceremony. The Choui Cultural Festival progress report and the Choui Award ceremony will also take place. The festival concludes at 3:40 PM, offering participants a full day to immerse themselves in the essence of traditional Korean tea culture.
A National Symbol of Korean Tea Culture
The Choui Cultural Festival has grown beyond a local event to become a representative festival of Korean tea culture.
Over the years, media coverage has highlighted the festival’s role in preserving Korea’s tea heritage and promoting the cultural value of Haenam’s tea traditions. This year, tea enthusiasts and tourists from across the country are expected to participate.
A Haenam County official said,
“The Choui Cultural Festival is more than just a cultural event; it is a significant festival where the traditions and spirit of Korean tea can be experienced and passed on. We hope many people will join us to feel the spirit of Choui Seonsa and the culture of tea in Haenam firsthand.”
