더불어민주당 전남·광주통합특별시장 경선 후보인 민형배 국회의원(광주 광산구을)이 노동의 가치와 인간 존엄 회복을 전면에 내세우며 ‘전태일 정신의 현재화’를 강하게 촉구했다.
민 후보는 14일 광주 동구 5·18민주광장에서 열린 ‘전태일의 꿈, 필사로 잇다’ 행사에 참석해 시민들과 함께 ‘전태일 평전’ 손글씨 이어쓰기에 참여하며 노동의 의미를 되새겼다.
이번 행사는 전국민주노동조합총연맹 광주지역본부와 전태일재단을 비롯한 노동·시민사회단체가 공동 주최한 시민 참여형 캠페인이다.
특히 노동운동의 상징인 전태일 열사의 뜻을 기리고, 그가 분신한 11월 13일을 국가기념일로 지정하자는 사회적 공감대를 확산하기 위해 마련됐다.

■ “전태일 정신은 선언이 아니라 실천이다”
민형배 후보는 행사 현장에서 “전태일 정신은 단순한 과거의 이야기가 아니라, 지금 이 순간에도 유효한 ‘사람의 존엄’에 대한 선언”이라며 “비정규직 노동자와 이주 노동자 등 여전히 보호받지 못하는 이들의 현실을 외면해서는 안 된다”고 강조했다.
이어 “노동이 존중받는 사회, 시민의 권리가 온전히 보장되는 도시를 만드는 것이야말로 전태일 정신을 계승하는 길”이라며 “통합특별시는 단순한 행정통합이 아니라, 인간의 존엄이 실현되는 도시로 설계돼야 한다.”고 밝혔다.

■ “한 글자씩 이어쓴다… 노동의 가치를 다시 새기다”
이날 행사에서 민 후보는 시민들과 함께 ‘전태일 평전’을 한 글자씩 직접 필사하며, 노동의 소중함과 인간다운 삶의 가치를 몸소 체험하는 시간을 가졌다.
그는 “손글씨 이어쓰기는 단순한 행사가 아니라 전태일이 남긴 질문을 오늘의 현실 속에서 다시 묻는 과정”이라며 “이 작은 실천이 모여 사회를 바꾸는 힘이 된다”고 말했다.
또한 “11월 13일은 한 노동자의 희생을 넘어 대한민국 노동의 역사를 다시 세운 날”이라며 “국가가 공식적으로 기억하고 기념해야 할 날로 반드시 자리 잡아야 한다.”고 덧붙였다.

■ “기억을 넘어 제도와 정책으로”
민형배 후보는 이번 참여를 계기로 노동 존중 사회 구현을 위한 정책적 의지도 함께 밝혔다.
그는 “전태일 정신은 더 이상 기념과 추모에 머물러서는 안 된다”며 “제도와 정책으로 이어질 때 비로소 완성된다.”고 강조했다.

이어 “통합특별시를 노동권이 보장되는 도시, 시민이 주인이 되는 도시로 만들겠다.”며 “노동이 존중받는 사회를 향한 변화에 끝까지 함께하겠다.”고 밝혔다.

On the 14th, Min attended the “Continuing Jeon Tae-il’s Dream Through Handwriting” event held at May 18 Democracy Square in Dong-gu, Gwangju, where he joined citizens in a relay-style handwritten transcription of A Biography of Jeon Tae-il, reflecting on the meaning of labor.
The event was co-hosted by the Gwangju Regional Headquarters of the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions and the Jeon Tae-il Foundation, along with labor and civil society groups, as a participatory civic campaign.
It was particularly organized to honor the legacy of Jeon Tae-il, a symbol of the labor movement, and to build public consensus for designating November 13—the day of his self-immolation—as a national commemorative day.
■ “The Spirit of Jeon Tae-il Is Not a Declaration, but Practice”
Speaking at the event, Min stated, “The spirit of Jeon Tae-il is not merely a story of the past, but a declaration of human dignity that remains valid even today.”
He emphasized, “We must not turn away from the realities faced by non-regular workers and migrant workers who are still unprotected in our society.”
He added, “Creating a society where labor is respected and citizens’ rights are fully guaranteed is the true way to inherit Jeon Tae-il’s spirit,” stressing that “the Integrated Special City must be designed not merely as an administrative merger, but as a city where human dignity is fully realized.”
■ “Writing One Letter at a Time… Reinscribing the Value of Labor”
During the event, Min participated in a collective handwriting activity, transcribing A Biography of Jeon Tae-il letter by letter alongside citizens, embodying the value of labor and a life of dignity.
He noted, “This act of handwriting is not just a symbolic event, but a process of revisiting the questions Jeon Tae-il left behind in today’s reality,” adding, “Such small acts of practice can collectively become a force that transforms society.”
He further remarked, “November 13 marks not only the sacrifice of one worker, but a turning point in the history of labor in Korea,” and stressed that “it must be officially recognized and commemorated as a national day.”
■ “Beyond Memory—Toward Systems and Policies”
Min also expressed his policy commitment to building a labor-respecting society through this participation.
He stated, “The spirit of Jeon Tae-il must no longer remain at the level of remembrance and commemoration—it must be realized through systems and policies.”
He concluded, “I will work to build an Integrated Special City where labor rights are guaranteed and citizens are the true owners,” adding, “I will stand to the end for a society that respects labor.”
