기후에너지환경부 산하 국립호남권생물자원관(관장 박진영)이 유용생물자원 활용 연구 분야에서 의미 있는 성과를 거두며 생물자원의 산업적 가치 확장 가능성을 다시 한 번 입증했다.

국립호남권생물자원관은 지난 24일 국립세종수목원에서 열린 한국자원식물학회 주관 ‘제26회 춘계학술대회’에서 박지원 전임연구원이 연구성과 발표를 통해 우수 발표상을 수상했다고 밝혔다.

이번 학술대회는 4월 23일부터 24일까지 ‘기후위기 시대, 자원식물의 가치 제고와 도심 속 확산’을 주제로 진행됐으며, 자원식물의 보존과 관리, 산업적 활용 방안을 중심으로 국내외 연구자들이 참여해 다양한 연구 성과를 공유했다.

특히 박지원 전임연구원이 발표한 연구는 실론계피나무(Cinnamomum zeylanicum)의 항염 효과를 세포 실험 수준에서 과학적으로 검증하고, 그 작용 원리(기전)를 규명한 점에서 높은 평가를 받았다. 해당 연구는 학술대회에서 우수 포스터로도 선정되며 학문적 성과를 동시에 인정받았다.

연구 결과에 따르면, 실론계피나무 추출물은 대식세포에서 면역 및 염증 반응에 관여하는 다양한 신호 전달 경로를 억제함으로써 염증 매개 물질의 생성을 효과적으로 저해하는 것으로 나타났다. 이는 기존 의약품이 가진 한계를 보완할 수 있는 천연 유래 생물자원의 활용 가능성을 제시한 것으로 평가된다.

박지원 전임연구원은 “이번 연구를 계기로 국내 생물자원의 기능성과 활용 가능성을 더욱 체계적으로 발굴하고, 산업적 가치 증대를 위한 연구개발에 지속적으로 힘쓰겠다.”고 밝혔다.

국립호남권생물자원관 관계자는 “기후위기 시대에 생물자원의 중요성이 더욱 커지고 있는 만큼, 생물다양성 보전과 함께 실질적인 산업 활용까지 연결하는 연구를 지속적으로 확대해 나갈 계획”이라고 강조했다.

이번 수상은 단순한 학술적 성과를 넘어, 지역 기반 생물자원이 미래 바이오산업과 환경 대응 전략의 핵심 자산으로 자리매김할 수 있음을 보여주는 사례로 주목된다.

The Honam National Institute of Biological Resources, affiliated with the Ministry of Climate and Energy Environment (President: Park Jin-young), has achieved a meaningful milestone in the field of useful biological resource research, once again demonstrating the potential to expand the industrial value of biological resources.
The institute announced that researcher Park Ji-won received the Best Presentation Award at the 26th Spring Academic Conference hosted by the Korean Society for Plant Resources, held on April 24 at the National Sejong Arboretum.
The conference, held from April 23 to 24 under the theme “Enhancing the Value of Plant Resources and Expanding Their Presence in Urban Areas in the Era of Climate Crisis,” brought together domestic and international researchers to share a wide range of research outcomes focused on the conservation, management, and industrial utilization of plant resources.
In particular, the study presented by researcher Park Ji-won received high recognition for scientifically verifying the anti-inflammatory effects of Ceylon cinnamon (Cinnamomum zeylanicum) at the cellular level and elucidating its mechanism of action. The research was also selected as an outstanding poster at the conference, earning dual academic recognition.
According to the findings, extracts of Ceylon cinnamon effectively suppress the production of inflammatory mediators by inhibiting various signaling pathways involved in immune and inflammatory responses in macrophages. This suggests strong potential for the use of natural biological resources to complement the limitations of existing pharmaceuticals.
Researcher Park Ji-won stated, “Based on this study, we will continue to identify functional domestic biological resources and expand their applications through systematic research and development to enhance their industrial value.”
An official from the institute emphasized, “As the importance of biological resources grows in the era of climate crisis, we will continue to expand research that not only preserves biodiversity but also connects it to practical industrial applications.”
This award is gaining attention as it goes beyond a simple academic achievement, highlighting how region-based biological resources can emerge as key assets in future bio-industries and environmental response strategies.
