더불어민주당이 제22대 국회 후반기 국회의장단 후보 선출을 위한 권리당원 온라인투표를 실시하면서, 전남 서남권인 해남·완도·진도 지역 권리당원들의 관심도 높아지고 있다.
이번 투표는 5월 11일 오전 9시부터 12일 오후 6시까지 진행되며, 권리당원을 대상으로 스마트폰과 PC를 활용한 온라인 방식으로 실시된다.
특히 해남·완도·진도 지역은 전통적으로 민주당 지지세가 강한 지역으로 꼽히는 만큼, 권리당원들 사이에서도 “후반기 국회의 개혁 방향과 당 운영 기조를 결정하는 중요한 선거”라는 인식이 확산되며 높은 관심이 이어지고 있다.
지역 정치권과 당원들 사이에서는 민생경제 회복과 지방소멸 대응, 농어촌 균형발전, 지역 예산 확보 등 향후 국회 운영 방향에 따라 지역 현안 추진 속도에도 적지 않은 영향을 미칠 수 있다는 분석이 나온다.
민주당은 이번 선출 과정에서 당원 참여 확대와 민주적 정당 운영 강화를 강조하며 국회의장 후보 선출에 ‘선호투표제’를 도입했다.
이에 따라 권리당원들은 의장 후보 출마자들의 선호 순위를 모두 선택해야 투표가 완료된다.
국회의장 후보에는 기호 1번 박지원 후보, 기호 2번 조정식 후보, 기호 3번 김태년 후보가 출마했다.
이 가운데 박지원 후보는 전남 해남·완도·진도 지역구를 둔 현역 국회의원으로, 오랜 정치 경륜과 중앙정치 경험을 갖춘 대표적 원로 정치인으로 평가받고 있다.
1942년 전남 진도군에서 태어난 박지원 후보는 단국대학교 상학과를 졸업했으며, 김대중 정부 시절 대통령비서실장과 문화관광부 장관을 지냈다. 이후 민주당과 국민의당 원내대표를 역임했고, 문재인 정부에서는 국가정보원장을 맡으며 정치·행정·외교·안보 분야를 두루 경험한 인물로 알려져 있다.
그는 1992년 민주당 비례대표로 처음 국회에 입성한 이후 김대중 전 대통령의 최측근으로 활동하며 ‘DJ의 복심’, ‘정치 9단’이라는 별칭으로 불렸다. 국민의 정부 시절에는 핵심 참모로서 정권 운영에 깊숙이 참여했고, 이후에도 여야를 넘나드는 정치 협상력과 전략적 판단 능력으로 존재감을 이어왔다.
정치 활동 과정에서는 2014년 이른바 ‘만만회 의혹’을 제기하며 당시 박근혜 정부를 강하게 비판해 명예훼손 혐의로 기소되기도 했지만, 정치권 안팎에서는 독립적 목소리를 내는 정치인이라는 평가도 함께 받아왔다. 방송과 언론 활동을 통해 대중과의 소통 역시 활발히 이어왔다.
국회를 잠시 떠난 시기에는 단국대학교 석좌교수로 재직하며 정치·외교·남북관계 분야 강연과 연구 활동을 진행했으며, 2024년 총선에서 다시 국회에 복귀해 5선 고지에 올랐다. 특히 헌정사상 최고령 지역구 의원이라는 상징성과 함께 원로 정치인의 귀환이라는 평가를 받았다.
최근 박지원 후보는 “지역 발전과 정권 교체를 위해 마지막까지 헌신하겠다.”고 밝히며 활발한 의정활동을 이어가고 있다.
고령에도 불구하고 왕성한 정치 활동과 현장 행보를 이어가며 후반기 국회의장 후보군 가운데 가장 풍부한 정치 경험을 갖춘 인물 중 한 명으로 거론되고 있다.
한편 부의장 후보에는 남인순 후보와 민홍철 후보가 등록했으며, 부의장 선거는 2인 출마로 인해 선호투표 방식 없이 진행된다.

Party Members in Haenam, Wando, and Jindo Show Strong Interest… “A Crucial Decision That Will Shape the Direction of the National Assembly”
The Democratic Party of Korea has begun online voting for registered party members to elect candidates for the second-half leadership of the 22nd National Assembly, drawing growing attention from party members in the southwestern Jeollanam-do region, including Haenam, Wando, and Jindo.
The voting will take place from 9:00 a.m. on May 11 to 6:00 p.m. on May 12 and will be conducted online through smartphones and PCs for registered party members.
As Haenam, Wando, and Jindo are traditionally regarded as strongholds of support for the Democratic Party, local party members are showing significant interest, viewing the election as “an important vote that will determine the reform direction and operational stance of the National Assembly in its second half.”
Political circles and party members in the region believe that the outcome could significantly affect the progress of local issues, including economic recovery, responses to regional depopulation, balanced rural development, and securing national budget allocations.
The Democratic Party emphasized expanded party-member participation and democratic party governance by introducing a “preferential voting system” for the election of the National Assembly Speaker candidate.
Under this system, party members must rank all candidates in order of preference for their vote to be considered complete.
The candidates for National Assembly Speaker are:
Candidate No. 1: 박지원
Candidate No. 2: 조정식
Candidate No. 3: 김태년
Among them, Park Jie-won, the incumbent lawmaker representing Haenam, Wando, and Jindo in South Jeolla Province, is widely regarded as one of Korea’s most experienced senior politicians with extensive experience in national politics.
Born in Jindo County, South Jeolla Province, in 1942, Park graduated from Dankook University with a degree in Commerce. During the Kim Dae-jung administration, he served as Chief Presidential Secretary and Minister of Culture and Tourism. He later became floor leader of both the Democratic Party and the People’s Party and also served as Director of the National Intelligence Service under the Moon Jae-in administration, gaining broad experience in politics, administration, diplomacy, and national security.
Park first entered the National Assembly in 1992 as a proportional representation lawmaker for the Democratic Party. As one of former President Kim Dae-jung’s closest aides, he earned nicknames such as “DJ’s trusted confidant” and “the master strategist of politics.” During the Kim Dae-jung administration, he played a central role in state affairs and later maintained his political influence through his negotiation skills and strategic judgment across party lines.
In 2014, Park strongly criticized the Park Geun-hye administration by raising allegations surrounding the so-called “Manmanhoe scandal,” which later led to defamation charges against him. Nevertheless, he continued to be recognized both inside and outside political circles as an outspoken and independent political figure. He also remained active in television and media commentary.
During a temporary break from parliament, Park served as a distinguished professor at Dankook University, conducting lectures and research in politics, diplomacy, and inter-Korean relations. In the 2024 general election, he returned to the National Assembly and won his fifth term, becoming the oldest constituency lawmaker in Korean constitutional history. His comeback was widely viewed as the return of a symbolic senior statesman.
Recently, Park stated that he would “devote himself until the very end to regional development and political change,” while continuing vigorous legislative and political activities. Despite his advanced age, he remains highly active in politics and public engagements and is considered one of the most experienced figures among the candidates for Speaker of the National Assembly.
Meanwhile, the candidates for Deputy Speaker are 남인순 and 민홍철. Since only two candidates are running, the Deputy Speaker election will not use the preferential voting system.
