국립호남권생물자원관과 전라남도산림연구원이 전남 지역의 풍부한 야생생물자원을 활용한 그린바이오 산업 육성에 손을 맞잡았다.

국립호남권생물자원관(관장 박진영)은 2일 전라남도산림연구원 산림비즈니스센터 대회의실에서 전라남도산림연구원(원장 오득실)과 ‘야생생물자원의 산업적 활용과 그린바이오 소재 개발’을 위한 업무협력 협약(MOU)을 체결했다고 밝혔다.

이번 협약은 섬과 연안, 산림 등 전남 지역이 보유한 다양한 생물자원의 유용 가치를 발굴하고, 이를 고부가가치 그린바이오 산업 소재로 상용화하기 위해 마련됐다.

양 기관은 협약을 통해 ▲도서·연안·산림 야생생물자원의 유용 가치 발굴 ▲그린바이오 소재 기능성 평가 및 제품화 ▲원료 공급 안정화를 위한 표준 재배법 및 대량 증식 기술 개발 ▲공동 연구 및 홍보·마케팅 추진 ▲전남·광주 지역 임업인 소득 증대와 지역 산업 발전 기여 등 5개 분야에서 협력을 강화하기로 했다.

특히 이번 협약은 연구 성과를 산업 현장과 지역사회에 직접 연결하는 실용적 협력 모델이라는 점에서 주목된다. 양 기관은 생물자원의 국산화와 안정적인 원료 공급 체계를 구축해 기후변화와 생물다양성 협약 등 글로벌 환경 변화에 대응하는 한편, 지역 임업인의 소득 증대와 지역경제 활성화에도 기여할 것으로 기대하고 있다.

국립호남권생물자원관은 섬·연안 생물자원의 조사와 발굴, 표본 및 정보의 수집·관리, 연구·전시·교육 등을 수행하는 기후에너지환경부 산하 전문기관으로, 국가 생물주권 확보와 생물자원의 지속가능한 이용을 목표로 하고 있다.

전라남도산림연구원은 산림 유전자원 보존과 임산물 생산기술 개발, 산림바이오 연구 등을 수행하며 전남 임업 발전과 산림 생태계 보전에 앞장서고 있다.

오병건 국립호남권생물자원관 도서생물연구본부장은 “도서·연안 생물과 산림 생물 분야의 전문 연구 역량이 결합함으로써 차별화된 바이오 소재를 발굴할 수 있는 기반이 마련됐다”며 “우리 생물자원의 국산화율을 높이고 급성장하는 그린바이오 시장을 선점할 수 있도록 적극 협력하겠다.”고 말했다.

한편 이날 협약식에는 국립호남권생물자원관의 오병건 도서생물연구본부장과 생물자원활용연구실장, 생물자원은행부장, 전라남도산림연구원의 오득실 원장과 산림바이오과장, 바이오연구팀장 등 관계자들이 참석해 향후 공동 연구와 기술개발 방향에 대해 의견을 나눴다.

Building a Green Bio Ecosystem Based on Domestic Raw Materials Through Island, Coastal, and Forest Biological Resources
The National Institute of Biological Resources of the Honam Region (HNIBR) and the Jeollanam-do Forest Research Institute have joined forces to foster the green bio industry by utilizing the rich wild biological resources of Jeollanam-do Province.
HNIBR, headed by President Park Jin-young, announced on June 2 that it signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Jeollanam-do Forest Research Institute, led by Director Oh Deuk-sil, at the Forest Business Center Conference Hall in Naju, Jeollanam-do. The agreement aims to promote the industrial utilization of wild biological resources and the development of green bio materials.
The partnership was established to identify the valuable properties of diverse biological resources found in the province’s islands, coastal areas, and forests, and to commercialize them as high-value green bio materials.
Under the agreement, the two institutions will cooperate in five key areas:
Discovering valuable biological resources from islands, coastal regions, and forests;
Evaluating the functionality of green bio materials and developing commercial products;
Developing standardized cultivation methods and mass propagation technologies to ensure a stable supply of raw materials;
Conducting joint research, promotion, and marketing activities;
Contributing to increased income for forestry workers and the advancement of regional industries in Gwangju and Jeollanam-do.
The agreement is particularly significant because it is designed not only for research collaboration but also to ensure that research outcomes are translated into practical industrial applications and benefits for local communities.
Through the localization of biological resources and the establishment of a stable raw material supply system, both institutions aim to proactively respond to global environmental challenges, including climate change and biodiversity conservation agreements, while contributing to regional economic revitalization and increased income for forestry producers.
HNIBR is a specialized agency under the Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment dedicated to securing national biological sovereignty and promoting the sustainable use of biological resources through the exploration, collection, management, research, exhibition, and education of island and coastal biological resources.
The Jeollanam-do Forest Research Institute conducts forest biotechnology research, preserves forest genetic resources, and develops technologies for forest product cultivation, playing a key role in advancing forestry and conserving forest ecosystems in the province.
Oh Byeong-geon, Director of the Island Biological Research Division at HNIBR, stated, “By combining the expertise of institutions specializing in island, coastal, and forest biological resources, we have established a foundation for discovering differentiated bio materials. We will actively cooperate to increase the localization rate of biological resources and secure a leading position in the rapidly growing green bio market.”
The signing ceremony was attended by key officials from both organizations, including Director Oh Byeong-geon, the Head of the Biological Resource Utilization Research Office, and the Director of the Biological Resource Bank Department from HNIBR, as well as Director Oh Deuk-sil, the Head of the Forest Bio Division, and the Bio Research Team Leader from the Jeollanam-do Forest Research Institute. Participants exchanged views on future collaborative research and technology development initiatives.
