여수·순천 10·19사건 77주기…다채로운 추모행사 열려

전라남도는 오는 19일 구례군 지리산역사문화관에서 열리는 ‘여순사건 제77주기 합동추념식’을 앞두고, 희생자의 넋을 기리고 전국적 추모 분위기를 확산하기 위한 다채로운 부대행사를 마련했다.

전남도는 올해 77주기를 맞아 진실 규명과 역사적 교훈의 계승, 그리고 유족과 도민의 치유와 화해를 위한 문화·예술·학술·청소년 참여 프로그램을 다층적으로 운영한다.

도청 윤선도홀에서는 오는 19일까지 ‘여순사건, AI와 민화로 피어나다’ 전시회가 열려 평화문학상 당선작을 바탕으로 한 인공지능 시화전과 민화 작품이 함께 선보인다.

또한 18일부터 31일까지 전남 동부청사 갤러리에서는 유족이 직접 제작한 문자도 특별전이, 추념식 당일 지리산역사문화관에서는 유족 지상 사진전이 개최된다.

21일에는 GS칼텍스 예울마루 대극장에서 합창과 오케스트라가 어우러지는 추모 공연이 열려, 음악을 통한 치유와 평화의 메시지를 전할 예정이다.

시군별 추모행사도 다채롭다.

여수시는 이순신광장에서 합동추념식과 전야제를 개최하고, 여수세계박람회장 국제관에서 평화·인권 미술제를 연다.

이와 함께 창작오페라 ‘침묵 1948’ 공연과 국제학술심포지엄을 통해 예술과 학술이 만나는 장을 마련했다.

순천시는 ‘세대를 이어 동백 피어나다’를 주제로 한 사진·글 전시와 청소년 서포터즈 예술제를 열어 미래세대와 함께하는 기억의 공간을 꾸민다.

광양시는 시민이 참여하는 추념식을 준비하고 있으며, 구례군은 희생자 위령제와 도올 김용옥 박사의 특별강연, 추모공연을 연다.

또한 고흥군에서도 위령제와 사진전이, 서울 광화문 청계천 광장에서는 19일 자체 추념식이 열린다.

이번 77주기 부대행사는 AI와 민화의 융합 전시, 국제학술심포지엄, 청소년 예술제 등 새로운 형식이 더해져 단순한 추모를 넘어 전국적 공감과 교육적 의미를 확산하는 계기가 될 것으로 기대된다.

이길용 전라남도 여순사건지원단장은 “여순사건 제77주기를 맞아 진실을 규명하고 의미를 되새기며, 진실과 평화의 가치가 우리 사회 전반에 뿌리내리는 계기가 되길 바란다.”며 “특히 이번 추념식과 부대행사를 통해 유족의 아픔을 위로하고, 국민 모두가 함께 공감하고 기억을 나누는 장이 되길 기대한다.”고 말했다.

한편, 여순사건은 1948년 10월 19일부터 1955년 4월 1일까지 전남·전북·경남 일부 지역에서 발생한 혼란의 진압 과정에서 수많은 민간인이 무고하게 희생된 현대사의 비극으로 기록되고 있다.

Yeosu–Suncheon October 19 Incident Marks 77th Anniversary with Various Memorial Events
– Joint Memorial Ceremony in Gurye, Performances, Exhibitions, and Academic Symposiums Across the Province –
Jeollanam-do Province will host a series of diverse side events to honor the victims and foster a nationwide atmosphere of remembrance ahead of the “77th Anniversary Joint Memorial Ceremony for the Yeosu–Suncheon October 19 Incident,” which will take place on October 19 at the Jirisan History and Culture Center in Gurye County.
Marking the 77th anniversary this year, the province aims to promote truth-finding, historical reflection, and reconciliation and healing for bereaved families and residents through a wide range of cultural, artistic, academic, and youth participation programs.
At the Yoon Seon-do Hall in the Jeonnam Provincial Government Office, the exhibition “The Yeosu–Suncheon Incident: Blossoming through AI and Folk Painting” will run until October 19, featuring an AI-powered poetry exhibition inspired by Peace Literature Award-winning works, presented alongside traditional Korean folk paintings (Minhwa).
From October 18 to 31, a special calligraphy exhibition created by victims’ families will be held at the Jeonnam Eastern Government Complex Gallery, while on the day of the memorial ceremony, the Jirisan History and Culture Center will host a photo exhibition of bereaved families.
On October 21, a memorial concert blending choral and orchestral performances will take place at the GS Caltex Yeulmaru Grand Theater, delivering messages of peace and healing through music.
Various city and county-level memorial events will also take place.
In Yeosu, a joint memorial service and pre-event festival will be held at Yi Sun-sin Square, along with a Peace and Human Rights Art Festival at the Yeosu World Expo International Pavilion. The city will also host the original opera “Silence 1948” and an international academic symposium, merging art and scholarship in remembrance.
In Suncheon, under the theme “Camellias Bloom Across Generations,” photo and literary exhibitions, along with a Youth Supporters Art Festival, will be organized to encourage remembrance and education among younger generations.
Gwangyang is preparing a citizen-participatory memorial ceremony, while Gurye will host a memorial rite, a special lecture by philosopher Kim Yong-ok (Do-ol), and a tribute performance.
Goheung County will hold its own memorial and photo exhibition, and on October 19, a separate ceremony will be held at Cheonggyecheon Plaza in Gwanghwamun, Seoul.
This year’s commemorative events incorporate innovative approaches such as the fusion of AI and traditional art, an international symposium, and youth art programs, aiming to go beyond remembrance and foster national empathy and educational significance.
Lee Gil-yong, Director of the Jeonnam Yeosu–Suncheon Incident Support Division, said,
“As we mark the 77th anniversary of the Yeosu–Suncheon Incident, we hope to reaffirm the truth and the meaning of the tragedy, ensuring that the values of truth and peace take root throughout our society.
We also hope this ceremony and its accompanying events will comfort the bereaved families and provide a space for all citizens to share in remembrance and empathy.”
Meanwhile, the Yeosu–Suncheon Incident is remembered as a tragic chapter in modern Korean history, in which numerous innocent civilians were killed during the suppression of unrest that took place between October 19, 1948, and April 1, 1955, across parts of Jeollanam-do, Jeollabuk-do, and Gyeongsangnam-do Provinces.
