광주에서 있어서는 안 될 일이 벌어졌다.
민주주의의 성지라 불리는 이 도시에서, 역사적 사실을 부정하고 공론을 오염시켜 온 인물이 ‘강연자’라는 이름으로 초청되었다.

그것도 “반대 의견도 들어야 한다.”는 명분 아래에서다.
그러나 우리는 분명히 말해야 한다.
이것은 의견의 다양성 문제가 아니라, 사실과 거짓의 경계가 무너진 사건이며, 국가가 방치한 공론장의 붕괴다.

■ ‘호남대안’이라는 이름의 역설
문제의 출발점은 스스로를 ‘대안’이라 부르는 일부 포럼의 사상적 태도다.
대안은 기존 질서에 대한 비판 위에서만 성립한다.
그러나 그 비판이 사실에 근거하지 않고, 역사적 합의를 부정하며, 피해자의 고통을 상대화하는 순간 그것은 대안이 아니라 반역사적 선동이 된다.
‘중립’, ‘균형’, ‘토론’이라는 언어는 언제부터인가 책임을 회피하는 방패로 사용돼 왔다.
역사적 사실과 허위 주장을 같은 테이블 위에 올려놓고 “판단은 청중의 몫”이라고 말하는 태도는 중립이 아니다.
검증을 포기한 방조이며, 거짓에 발언권을 부여하는 권력 행사다.

■ 광주에서의 강의는 단순한 일정이 아니다
광주는 어떤 도시인가.
거짓 정보가 어떻게 총과 탱크보다 먼저 사람을 죽일 수 있는지, 그 참혹한 결과를 온몸으로 겪은 도시다.
그래서 광주에서의 발언은 어디보다 무거워야 한다.
이곳에서는 말 한마디가 기억을 건드리고, 발언 하나가 상처를 다시 연다.
그런데도 역사 왜곡과 허위 서사로 논란을 일으켜 온 전 방통위원장이 광주에서 ‘강의’를 했다는 사실은, 그 자체로 2차 가해이며 기억 공동체에 대한 도전이다.
이것이 토론이 아니라 일방 강연이었다는 점에서, 그 부당성은 더욱 분명하다.

■ 처벌 없는 거짓이 극우를 키운다.
이런 일이 반복되는 이유는 단순하다.
책임이 없기 때문이다.
거짓이 드러나도 처벌받지 않고, 허위 사실이 유통돼도 제재가 없으며, 명예를 훼손당한 공동체는 스스로를 방어해야 한다.
이 과정에서 국민은 사회적 비용을 지불한다.
분열의 비용, 불신의 비용, 교육과 공론의 붕괴 비용을 말이다.
처벌이 없으면 거짓은 학습된다.
한 번 넘어가면 더 과감해지고, 더 자극적인 주장으로 확장된다.
그렇게 극우는 사상이 아니라 무대응이 키운 산물로 성장한다.

■ 정부의 침묵은 중립이 아니라 직무유기다
정부는 어디에 있었는가.
표현의 자유를 이유로 손을 놓고 있었다면, 그것은 자유의 수호가 아니라 책임 회피다.
표현의 자유는 허위를 방치하라는 면허가 아니다.
국가의 책무는 헌정 질서와 역사적 사실, 그리고 국민의 명예를 보호하는 데 있다.
허위 사실이 반복되고, 피해가 누적되며, 공론장이 오염되는데도 아무 조치가 없다면, 그 침묵은 소극적 직무유기라는 평가를 피할 수 없다.

■ 전라도의 비통함은 감정이 아니라 경고다
전라도의 분노와 비통함은 지역감정이 아니다.
그것은 이 나라가 어떤 역사 위에 서 있는지, 어디까지 허용할 수 있는지에 대한 최후의 경고다.
광주는 모든 말을 허용하는 도시가 아니다.
광주는 거짓이 사람을 죽인 역사를 기억하는 도시다.

■ 분명한 선을 그어야 한다.
반대 의견은 들어야 한다.
그러나 터무니없는 거짓을 들을 의무는 없다.
역사를 부정하는 자유를 보호하느라, 역사를 지켜온 국민의 존엄을 희생시킬 수는 없다.
광주는 실험장이 아니다.
민주주의는 무제한 개방이 아니라, 거짓이 의견으로 둔갑하는 순간 단호히 닫힐 줄 아는 체제다.
이 선을 긋는 일, 이제는 정부가 답해야 한다.

Something that should never have happened has taken place in Gwangju.
In this city, revered as the birthplace and moral stronghold of democracy, a figure who has repeatedly denied historical facts and polluted the public sphere was invited under the title of a “lecturer.”
All of this was justified by the familiar pretext: “We must also listen to opposing opinions.”
But we must state this clearly.
This is not a matter of diversity of views.
It is a collapse of the boundary between fact and falsehood, and a breakdown of the public sphere caused by the state’s deliberate inaction.
■ The Paradox of the Name “Honam Alternative”
The root of the problem lies in the ideological posture of certain forums that label themselves as “alternative.”
An alternative can only exist through a critical examination of the existing order.
But when that critique is not grounded in facts, when it denies historical consensus, and when it relativizes the suffering of victims, it ceases to be an alternative and becomes anti-historical agitation.
Words such as “neutrality,” “balance,” and “debate” have gradually turned into shields for evading responsibility.
Placing historical facts and demonstrable falsehoods on the same table and declaring, “Judgment is up to the audience,” is not neutrality.
It is abdication of verification—and an exercise of power that grants falsehood a public platform.
■ A Lecture in Gwangju Is Never Just Another Event
What kind of city is Gwangju?
It is a city that learned, through brutal experience, how false information can kill before guns and tanks do.
That is why speech in Gwangju must carry greater weight than anywhere else.
Here, a single sentence can disturb collective memory; a single claim can reopen wounds.
Despite this, the fact that a former chair of the broadcasting authority—long embroiled in controversy over historical distortion and false narratives—delivered a “lecture” in Gwangju is, in itself, an act of secondary victimization and a challenge to the community of memory.
That this was not a debate but a one-sided lecture only makes the injustice more unmistakable.
■ Lies Without Consequences Breed Extremism
The reason such incidents continue is simple: there is no accountability.
Falsehoods are exposed but not punished.
Disinformation circulates without sanction.
Communities whose honor has been damaged are left to defend themselves.
In the process, citizens pay the price.
The cost of division.
The cost of mistrust.
The cost of the collapse of education and public discourse.
When there is no punishment, lies are learned behavior.
Once tolerated, they become bolder, more provocative, and more systematic.
Thus, extremism does not grow from ideology alone—it is cultivated by institutional inaction.
■ Government Silence Is Not Neutrality, It Is Dereliction of Duty
Where was the government?
If it remained idle under the excuse of protecting freedom of expression, that was not a defense of liberty but an evasion of responsibility.
Freedom of expression is not a license to tolerate falsehoods.
The state’s duty is to safeguard constitutional order, historical truth, and the dignity of its citizens.
When falsehoods are repeated, harm accumulates, and the public sphere is corrupted—yet no action is taken—such silence can only be judged as passive dereliction of duty.
■ The Grief of Jeolla Is Not Emotion—It Is a Warning
The anger and sorrow of Jeolla Province are not regional sentiment.
They are a final warning about what kind of history this nation stands upon, and how far it is willing to tolerate its erosion.
Gwangju is not a city that permits all speech indiscriminately.
It is a city that remembers how lies once killed people.
■ A Clear Line Must Be Drawn
Opposing opinions must be heard.
But there is no obligation to listen to absurd falsehoods.
We cannot sacrifice the dignity of those who defended history in order to protect the “freedom” to deny it.
Gwangju is not an experiment ground.
Democracy is not limitless openness—it is a system that must decisively close its doors when lies masquerade as opinions.
Drawing that line is no longer a matter of debate.
It is now the government’s responsibility to answer.
