광주·전남 지역 대학 교수와 연구자 1,071명이 김영록 더불어민주당 전남광주특별시장 예비후보에 대한 지지를 공식 선언하며, 통합특별시 선거를 둘러싼 흐름이 새로운 국면에 들어섰다.

이번 지지 선언에는 전남대학교, 조선대학교, 동신대학교, 광주대학교, 목포대학교, 순천대학교, 초당대학교, 목포해양대학교 등 지역 주요 대학 교수들이 대거 참여했다.

김재기 전남대 교수, 조용준 조선대 교수, 이건철 동신대 교수, 노경수 광주대 교수, 박성현 목포대 교수, 김현진 순천대 교수, 김판진 초당대 교수, 박계각 목포해양대 교수 등 각 대학을 대표하는 인사들이 이름을 올리며 지역 학계 전반의 지지 흐름을 형성했다.

교수·연구자들은 김 후보의 가장 큰 강점으로 ‘성과로 입증된 행정력’을 꼽았다.
국가 AI컴퓨팅센터와 AI데이터센터 유치, 인공태양 등 대형 국책사업 확보, 광주 군·민간 공항 이전 문제 진전, 전남 국립의대 설립 추진 등 오랜 기간 해결되지 못했던 현안을 실제로 진전시킨 점을 높이 평가했다.

특히 민선 7·8기 광역단체장 직무수행평가에서 66개월 연속 1위를 기록한 점을 언급하며, 이미 검증된 리더십이라고 강조했다.

또한 김 후보가 전남·광주 통합을 처음으로 제안하고 이를 구체적인 정책으로 설계해낸 점 역시 중요한 지지 이유로 제시됐다.
교수들은 그가 정부로부터 20조 원 규모의 재정 지원과 공공기관 우선 이전 등 파격적인 인센티브를 이끌어낸 ‘전략가형 행정가’라고 평가했다.
인구 감소와 지역 소멸 위기 속에서 통합은 더 이상 선택이 아닌 필수 과제이며, 이를 가장 현실적으로 추진할 수 있는 인물이 김 후보라는 것이다.

이들은 선언문을 통해 “전남과 광주의 통합은 청년이 돌아오고 기업이 모이는 대전환의 출발점”이라며 “통합특별시가 나아가야 할 방향을 가장 잘 이해하고 있는 혁신 행정가가 바로 김영록”이라고 밝혔다. 이어 “대통령이 원하는 통합특별시장이자, 국가 전략을 실행할 수 있는 리더”라고 평가하며 지지를 분명히 했다.

They emphasized that Kim is uniquely positioned to elevate the challenges of Gwangju and Jeonnam into national-level agendas through close policy alignment with the Lee Jae-myung administration.
The declaration included participation from professors at major regional universities, including Chonnam National University, Chosun University, Dongshin University, Gwangju University, Mokpo National University, Sunchon National University, Chodang University, and Korea Maritime University, among others.
Notable participants included Professor Kim Jae-gi (Chonnam National University), Professor Cho Yong-jun (Chosun University), Professor Lee Geon-cheol (Dongshin University), Professor Noh Kyung-soo (Gwangju University), Professor Park Sung-hyun (Mokpo National University), Professor Kim Hyun-jin (Sunchon National University), Professor Kim Pan-jin (Chodang University), and Professor Park Gye-gak (Korea Maritime University), forming a broad consensus across the regional academic community.
The professors and researchers identified Kim’s greatest strength as his “proven administrative capability backed by tangible achievements.”
They highlighted his success in attracting major national projects such as the National AI Computing Center and AI Data Center, securing large-scale initiatives like artificial sun projects, making progress on the long-standing Gwangju military and civilian airport relocation issue, and advancing the establishment of a national medical school in Jeonnam.
They also noted that Kim ranked first for 66 consecutive months in job performance evaluations for provincial governors during his 7th and 8th terms, underscoring his already verified leadership.
Furthermore, his role as the first to propose and concretely design the Gwangju–Jeonnam integration was cited as a key reason for support.
The professors described him as a “strategic administrator” who successfully secured 20 trillion won in government financial support and unprecedented incentives such as priority relocation of public institutions.
They stressed that amid population decline and the threat of regional extinction, integration is no longer optional but essential—and that Kim is the most capable figure to realistically lead this transformation.
In their statement, they declared, “The integration of Gwangju and Jeonnam marks the beginning of a great transformation where young people return and businesses gather,” adding, “Kim Young-rok is the innovative administrator who best understands the path forward for the Integrated Special City.”
They further described him as “the mayor the president envisions and a leader capable of executing national strategies.”
This declaration goes beyond a simple political endorsement, signaling the active engagement of the regional intellectual community at a critical turning point for the Integrated Special City initiative.
