대한민국 도로 위는 때때로 무법천지를 방불케 한다. 정지선 위에 떡하니 멈춰 선 차량, 아무런 예고 없이 회전하는 차, 제한속도를 훌쩍 넘기며 내달리는 차량, 심지어 시내 한복판에서 위협 운전을 일삼는 이들까지. 이 모든 행위는 단지 법을 어기는 수준을 넘어, 다른 운전자의 생명과 보행자의 안전을 위협하는 심각한 폭력이다.

특히 횡단보도나 건널목 앞에 멈춰야 할 차량이 이를 무시하고 멈추지 않거나, 정지선을 침범해 보행자의 통행을 방해하는 장면은 흔히 볼 수 있다.

이 얼마나 무책임한가. 교통법규는 단지 형식적인 규제가 아니다. 그것은 ‘사람을 살리기 위한 약속’이다. 운전자의 양심이 깨어 있다면, 그 약속은 반드시 지켜져야 한다.

방향지시등을 켜지 않고 회전하는 행위 역시 교통사고의 단골 원인이다. 이는 단지 깜빡이를 켜지 않은 실수가 아니라, ‘나는 다른 사람에게 나의 움직임을 알릴 필요조차 느끼지 않는다.’는 태도에서 비롯된 이기주의다. 방향지시등은 상대 운전자와 보행자에 대한 최소한의 예의이자 생존을 위한 신호다.

과속은 더 말할 것도 없다. 제한속도를 넘기면 시야는 급격히 좁아지고, 제동거리는 길어지며, 돌발 상황에 대응할 여유는 사라진다. 도심에서는 10km/h만 빨라도 충돌 시 치명 율이 급격히 증가한다는 연구 결과도 있다.

‘조금이라도 빨리 가려다’ 평생을 갚아야 할 죄를 짓는 일, 너무나도 허무하지 않은가.

더욱 심각한 문제는, 일부 운전자가 이러한 위험한 행동을 ‘위협 운전’이라는 이름으로 의도적으로 행한다는 점이다. 끼어들기를 방해하거나, 급브레이크를 밟고, 상향등과 경적을 남발하는 등 시내 한복판에서조차 공공의 안전을 볼모로 잡는 이들이 있다. 이것은 운전이 아니라 협박이고, 공공안전에 대한 명백한 도전이다.

운전은 단지 개인의 이동 수단이 아니다. 그것은 ‘공간을 공유하는 행위’다. 따라서 운전자의 양심과 책임의식이 없다면, 도로는 순식간에 생존경쟁의 전장으로 돌변한다.

교통법규는 단지 경찰의 단속을 피하기 위한 장치가 아니라, 서로를 지키기 위한 최소한의 배려다.

이제는 바뀌어야 한다. 면허증을 취득할 때 배운 그 원칙을, 다시 가슴에 새겨야 한다. 법보다 앞서야 할 것은 양심이고, 단속보다 강해야 할 것은 운전자의 도덕성이다.

도로 위를 진정한 ‘공공의 공간’으로 바꾸는 일은 경찰이 아니라, 우리 스스로가 해야 할 일이다.

A Driver’s Conscience Saves Lives on the Road

The roads in South Korea often resemble a lawless wilderness. Cars stop in the middle of stop lines, vehicles make sudden turns without any warning, some speed far beyond the speed limit, and there are even those who engage in aggressive driving right in the city center. These actions go beyond simple lawbreaking; they are serious forms of violence that endanger the lives of other drivers and pedestrians.

Especially concerning are the vehicles that fail to stop in front of crosswalks or pedestrian crossings, or those that infringe on stop lines, obstructing pedestrians’ passage. These scenes are all too common.

How irresponsible is this? Traffic regulations are not mere formalities. They are “promises made to save lives.” If a driver’s conscience is awake, this promise must be kept.

Driving without using a turn signal is another common cause of accidents. It is not merely a mistake of forgetting to signal, but an attitude of “I don’t need to inform others of my movements.” This is selfishness. Turn signals are a minimal sign of respect and a signal for survival for both other drivers and pedestrians.

Speeding is also self-evident. Exceeding the speed limit narrows one’s field of vision, increases stopping distance, and eliminates the time needed to respond to unexpected situations. Studies show that even a 10 km/h speed increase in urban areas significantly raises the fatality rate in the event of a crash.

Isn’t it absurd to commit a crime for the sake of getting somewhere a little faster, a crime that could cost a lifetime?

An even more serious issue is that some drivers deliberately engage in these dangerous actions, often referred to as “aggressive driving.” Blocking others from merging, suddenly braking, or excessively using high beams and horns, these drivers hold public safety hostage even in the middle of the city. This is not driving; it’s harassment and a blatant challenge to public safety.

Driving is not merely a personal means of transportation. It is an act of “sharing space.” Therefore, without the conscience and sense of responsibility of the driver, the road quickly turns into a battlefield for survival.

Traffic laws are not just devices to avoid police enforcement; they are the minimal consideration needed to protect each other.

Change must come. The principles we learned when we first obtained our driver’s license must be etched back into our hearts. Above the law, there must be conscience, and stronger than enforcement, there must be the morality of the driver.

Making the road a true “public space” is not the job of the police, but something we must do ourselves.
