“수묵으로 세계를 그리다” — 전남국제수묵비엔날레, 44만 관람객 기록하며 성황리 폐막

두 달간 남도의 하늘과 바다를 수묵으로 물들인 2025 전남국제수묵비엔날레가 10월 31일 대단원의 막을 내렸다.

총 44만 명이 관람하며 전통과 현대, 지역과 세계를 아우르는 전남 대표 국제예술행사로서의 위상을 다시 한 번 입증했다.

올해 비엔날레는 ‘문명의 이웃들 – Somewhere Over the Yellow Sea’를 주제로 20개국 83명의 작가가 참여, 300여 점의 작품을 선보였다.

전시는 해남·진도·목포 등지에서 열렸으며, 해남에서는 윤두서의 ‘세마도’ 진본이 처음 공개돼 화제를 모았다.

목포실내체육관은 현대적 전시장으로 탈바꿈해 전광영, 황인기, 폴란드 작가 야시엘스키 등 국내외 작가들의 실험적 작품이 관람객의 시선을 사로잡았다.

진도에서는 이응노·박생광·서세옥 등 거장들의 작품을 통해 한국화의 현대적 변화를 조명했다.

또한 국제학술심포지엄, 청소년 체험프로그램 등 학술·교육·체험이 결합된 복합 문화행사로 발전하며 대중과의 소통 폭을 넓혔다.

김은영 전남문화재단 대표이사는 “전통 수묵의 정신을 현대적으로 재해석해 세계와 소통한 전환점이 됐다”며 “앞으로도 수묵비엔날레를 세계 유일의 수묵 예술축제로 발전시켜 나가겠다.”고 밝혔다.

전남도와 전남문화재단은 이번 성과를 기반으로 2027 비엔날레 준비와 ‘전남국제수묵비엔날레아트센터’ 건립 추진 등 중장기 전략을 본격화할 계획이다.

“Painting the World in Ink” — Jeonnam International Ink Biennale Closes in Success with 440,000 Visitors
Reaffirming its status as Jeonnam’s leading international art event… Plans underway for Art Center construction and next Biennale
After coloring the skies and seas of southern Korea in ink for two months, the 2025 Jeonnam International Ink Biennale drew to a successful close on October 31.
Attracting 440,000 visitors, the Biennale once again proved its standing as Jeonnam’s flagship international art event, bridging tradition and modernity, local and global art.
Under the theme “Neighbors of Civilization – Somewhere Over the Yellow Sea,” artists from 20 countries presented more than 300 works, exploring new interpretations of traditional ink painting.
The exhibition was held across Haenam, Jindo, and Mokpo, with particular attention on Haenam, where the original version of Yoon Duseo’s “Portrait of a Horse” was unveiled to the public for the first time, drawing great interest.
The Mokpo Indoor Gymnasium was transformed into a contemporary exhibition space, featuring striking works by renowned artists such as Chun Kwang Young, Hwang In-gi, and Polish artist Przemysław Jasielski, whose experimental approaches captivated audiences.
In Jindo, the exhibition highlighted the modern evolution of Korean ink painting through masterpieces by five modern art masters — Lee Ung-no, Park Saeng-kwang, Seo Se-ok, among others.
Beyond exhibitions, the Biennale expanded into an integrated cultural event featuring academic symposia, youth education programs, and hands-on experiences that encouraged public participation and interaction.
Kim Eun-young, CEO of the Jeonnam Cultural Foundation, remarked,
“This Biennale reinterpreted the spirit of traditional ink art through a contemporary lens, creating a turning point for global cultural exchange. We will continue to develop it into the world’s only Biennale dedicated to ink art.”
Building on this year’s achievements, Jeonnam Province and the Jeonnam Cultural Foundation plan to launch preparations for the 2027 Biennale and promote the construction of the Jeonnam International Ink Biennale Art Center as part of a long-term development strategy.
