전남 담양에서 출근 시간대 대형 인명사고로 이어질 뻔한 교통사고가 발생했다.

덤프트럭과 고속버스가 정면으로 충돌하는 아찔한 사고였지만, 신속한 대응으로 대형 참사를 가까스로 막았다.

전남소방본부에 따르면 3월 19일 오전 8시 58분경, 담양군 담양읍 강쟁리 담양공고 회전교차로에서 덤프트럭과 고속버스가 추돌하는 사고가 발생했다.

사고 직후 소방과 경찰 등 총 24명이 긴급 투입되고, 지휘차·펌프차·구조차·구급차 등 장비 8대가 현장에 출동하며 긴박한 구조 대응이 펼쳐졌다.

■ “버스 탑승자 14명”… 자칫 대형 참사로 번질 뻔
사고 당시 고속버스에는 운전자를 포함해 13명이 탑승하고 있었으며, 덤프트럭 운전자까지 포함하면 총 14명이 사고에 연루됐다.
초기에는 다수 인명피해가 우려됐지만, 최종 확인 결과 경상자 4명으로 집계됐다.
이 가운데 4명은 병원으로 이송됐고, 나머지 10명은 현장 처치 후 귀가 또는 미이송 조치됐다.

신고 접수 1분 만에 유관기관 공동 대응이 이뤄졌고, 5분도 채 되지 않아 선착대가 현장에 도착했다.
이후 구급대는 즉시 환자 분류에 들어가 신속한 이송 조치를 진행했다.

현장에서는 구조가 필요한 중상자는 발생하지 않은 것으로 확인됐다.

이번 사고는 교통 흐름이 빠르게 교차하는 회전교차로에서 발생했다는 점에서 구조적 위험성이 다시 한 번 드러났다는 지적이다.
특히 대형 차량 간 충돌이 발생할 경우 피해 규모가 급격히 커질 수 있어, 교차로 설계 개선과 속도 관리, 안전시설 보강이 시급하다는 목소리가 나온다.

이번 사고는 대형 참사로 이어질 수 있었던 상황에서 신속한 초기 대응이 피해를 최소화한 사례로 평가되지만, 동시에 지역 교통안전 체계 전반에 대한 점검 필요성을 강하게 남겼다.

A serious traffic accident that could have resulted in a major casualty incident occurred during the morning commute in Damyang, South Jeolla Province.
A dump truck and an express bus collided in what could have been a catastrophic crash, but swift emergency response efforts helped prevent a large-scale disaster.
According to the Jeonnam Fire Headquarters, the accident occurred at approximately 8:58 a.m. on March 19 at the Damyang Technical High School roundabout in Gangjaeng-ri, Damyang-eup.
Immediately after the accident, a total of 24 personnel—including firefighters and police—were deployed to the scene. Eight emergency vehicles, including a command unit, pump truck, rescue unit, and ambulances, were mobilized, initiating an urgent response operation.

At the time of the accident, the express bus was carrying 13 passengers, including the driver, while the dump truck driver was also involved—bringing the total number of individuals affected to 14.
Initial reports raised concerns about multiple casualties, but final assessments confirmed four minor injuries.
All four injured individuals were transported to hospitals, while the remaining 10 people were treated on-site or did not require transport.

Within one minute of receiving the emergency call, a coordinated multi-agency response was activated.
First responders arrived at the scene in less than five minutes.
Emergency medical teams immediately began triaging patients and carrying out rapid transport:

09:39 a.m.: One patient transported to Gwangju 첨단 Hospital
09:54 a.m.: One patient transported to Gwangju KS Hospital
No critically injured patients requiring rescue operations were reported.

The accident has once again highlighted the structural risks associated with roundabouts, where traffic flows intersect rapidly.
Experts warn that collisions involving large vehicles can quickly escalate in severity, emphasizing the urgent need for improvements in intersection design, speed control measures, and enhanced safety infrastructure.
While the swift initial response prevented what could have been a major disaster, the incident underscores the need for a comprehensive review of regional traffic safety systems.
