국가유산청 국립해양유산연구소가 조선통신사선을 활용한 해양문화유산 체험 프로그램을 운영하며 국민과 함께하는 살아있는 해양유산 체험에 나선다.

국립해양유산연구소(소장 이은석)는 오는 29일까지 경기도 화성시와 화성시문화관광재단이 주최하는 「제16회 화성 뱃놀이 축제」에 참여해 조선통신사선을 활용한 선상박물관 및 승선체험 프로그램을 운영한다고 밝혔다.

이번 사업은 지역 대표 축제와 국가유산 활용 콘텐츠를 연계해 국민들에게 우리 전통 한선의 우수성과 해양문화유산의 가치를 직접 체험할 기회를 제공하고, 지역 관광 활성화와 국가유산 활용 모델 확산을 위해 마련됐다.

조선통신사선은 국립해양유산연구소가 지난 2018년 실물 크기로 재현한 조선시대 외교선이다.

149톤 규모에 길이 34.5m, 너비 9.3m, 높이 5m 규모로 제작됐으며, 523마력 엔진 2기를 갖춘 대형 전통선박이다.

특히 조선통신사선은 2023년부터 한·일 뱃길 재현 항해를 이어오고 있으며, 지난해에는 조선통신사 파견 이후 261년 만에 일본 오사카항 입항에 성공해 우리 전통 조선기술과 항해문화의 우수성을 국내외에 알리기도 했다.

이번 화성 뱃놀이 축제 참여를 위해 조선통신사선은 지난 15일 국립해양유산연구소 해상 계류장에서 무사항해 안전기원식을 갖고 서해 항해에 올랐다.

행사에는 화성시 관계자와 목포지역 유관기관장, 문화관광해설사 등 50여 명이 참석해 안전 항해와 성공적인 축제 운영을 기원했다.
이후 조선통신사선은 19일 목포를 출항해 위도와 신진도를 거쳐 화성시 전곡항에 성공적으로 입항했다.

화성 전곡항에서는 22일부터 25일까지 총 4일간 선상박물관과 승선체험 프로그램이 운영된다.
참가자들은 조선통신사선 내부 전시와 전문 해설을 통해 조선시대 외교와 해양교류의 역사를 배우고, 실제 승선과 항해 체험, 전통문화 공연 등을 함께 즐길 수 있다.

특히 선상박물관에서는 조선통신사선 재현 과정과 한·일 뱃길 재현 항해 기록, 판옥선 복원 연구 성과 등을 영상과 해설 콘텐츠로 만나볼 수 있다.
승선 체험은 하루 2회씩 총 8회 운영되며, 약 450명의 시민이 참여할 예정이다.

참가 신청은 화성시문화관광재단 누리집을 통해 가능하며, 자세한 사항은 국립해양유산연구소 누리집에서도 확인할 수 있다.

국립해양유산연구소 관계자는 “조선통신사선을 단순한 재현선이 아닌 평화와 교류의 상징적 문화유산으로 발전시켜 나가고 있다”며 “앞으로도 국민과 함께 향유할 수 있는 다양한 해양문화유산 체험 프로그램을 지속 확대해 나가겠다.”고 밝혔다.

The National Research Institute of Maritime Cultural Heritage under the Korea Heritage Service is launching a maritime cultural heritage experience program utilizing the Joseon Tongsinsa Ship, offering the public a unique opportunity to experience living maritime heritage firsthand.
The National Research Institute of Maritime Cultural Heritage (Director Lee Eun-seok) announced that it will operate a floating museum and boarding experience program featuring the Joseon Tongsinsa Ship during the “16th Hwaseong Boat Festival,” hosted by Hwaseong City and the Hwaseong City Cultural Foundation, through the 29th.
The project was designed to connect a representative regional festival with national heritage content, providing citizens with an opportunity to directly experience the excellence of traditional Korean wooden ships and the value of maritime cultural heritage, while also promoting regional tourism and expanding heritage utilization models.
The Joseon Tongsinsa Ship is a full-scale reproduction of a Joseon Dynasty diplomatic vessel recreated by the institute in 2018.
The vessel weighs 149 tons and measures 34.5 meters in length, 9.3 meters in width, and 5 meters in height. It is equipped with two 523-horsepower engines, making it a large-scale traditional Korean ship.
Since 2023, the Joseon Tongsinsa Ship has continued to recreate the historic sea route between Korea and Japan. Last year, it successfully entered Osaka Port in Japan for the first time in 261 years since the original Joseon diplomatic missions, drawing international attention to the excellence of Korea’s traditional shipbuilding and navigation culture.
Ahead of participating in the Hwaseong Boat Festival, the ship held a maritime safety and successful voyage ceremony on May 15 at the institute’s mooring site.
About 50 people attended the ceremony, including officials from Hwaseong City, representatives of related organizations in Mokpo, and cultural tourism interpreters, all praying for a safe voyage and successful festival operation.
The Joseon Tongsinsa Ship departed Mokpo on May 19 and successfully arrived at Jeongok Port in Hwaseong after passing through Wido and Sinjindo Islands.
At Jeongok Port, the floating museum and boarding experience program will operate for four days from May 22 to 25.
Participants will be able to learn about Joseon-era diplomacy and maritime exchanges through onboard exhibitions and professional commentary, while also enjoying actual sailing experiences and traditional cultural performances.
In particular, the floating museum will feature video and commentary content showcasing the reconstruction process of the Joseon Tongsinsa Ship, records of Korea-Japan route reenactment voyages, and research achievements related to the restoration of the Panokseon warship.
The boarding experience program will be held twice daily for a total of eight sessions, with approximately 450 citizens expected to participate.
Applications can be submitted through the Hwaseong City Cultural Foundation website, while detailed information is also available on the National Research Institute of Maritime Cultural Heritage website.
An official from the institute stated, “We are developing the Joseon Tongsinsa Ship not merely as a reproduction vessel, but as a symbolic cultural heritage representing peace and exchange,” adding, “We will continue to expand various maritime cultural heritage programs that can be enjoyed together with the public.”
